Indian parents who are not in sync with the latest career trends, the dynamic job market can be discomforting. There is a tussle between most students and parents when parents want their wards to follow the traditional time-tested streams of Medicine or Engineering. The parents do want the best for their children but they do not want to make daring choices. In such situations, a career counsellor acts as an arbitrator to help parents recognise the world beyond their limit. Largest Student Populace
India’s 350 million students, the largest student populace in the world, requires at least 1.4 million career counsellors to uphold a globally admissible student-to-school-counsellor proportion was admitted at The 2018 Annual International Career and College Counselling (IC3) Conference.
Dearth of Qualified Counsellors
Even if the schools are ready to hire counsellors, there is a dearth of qualified counsellors to guide the students. Keeping this in perspective the IC3 is setting up institutes which would have a one-year certification course for high school teachers and counsellors to help them fine-tune their knowledge of the finest counselling practices in the world and also to refurbish their skills.
IC3 Virtual Institute
A virtual institute, the IC3 is hosted by the four universities of OP Jindal, Shiv Nadar, Ahmedabad and Ashoka. The first batch started on 16th September wherein 50 teachers will be given free training via lectures and sessions are taken by trained professionals from abroad as well as from India, stated chairman, Ganesh Kohli of the Annual International Career and College Counselling Conference held recently in New Delhi. More colleges are expected to join in soon.
Mr. Kohli further added, “Never have students had so much freedom to choose courses, careers, and countries than they do today. These are however also times of extreme uncertainty. Students need guidance and coaching for career development like any other discipline taught in schools. If India has to realise its demographic dividend, it needs to provide one career counsellor for every 250 students it has”.
Counselling is crucial
Counsellors are crucial to motivate and enlighten the students and parents about the different career options and the transforming choices in the courses. Students will gain enormously from IC3’s endeavour to empower schools and colleges with specialized development prospects and advise students on what to study, where to study, and how to gear up for a brilliant career.
